Booming hospitality industry of Australia has created a strong demand for skilled cooks and chefs. For many migrants, working in commercial kitchens is more than just a job – it’s a pathway to a secure future. If you have years of cooking experience but no formal Australian qualification, “Recognition of Prior Learning” (RPL) and if you have been studying cookery then “Job Ready Program” (JRP) can be the key that unlocks Permanent Residency (PR).
RPL, JRP & Skills Assessment for PR: How They Connect
To apply for an Australian skilled visa, you need a positive skills assessment from “Trades Recognition Australia (TRA)” for both RPL and JRP. This assessment confirms that your skills meet Australian standards.
RPL makes this possible by converting your real-world experience into a nationally recognized qualification with which you can meet the formal requirements – without going back to school/college full-time. And, if you have already completed school, studying subjects related to commercial cookery, then you can follow the process of JRP.
Your pathway to permanent residency
Here’s how the process usually works:
- Obtain qualification: In RPL, you will gain your Certificate III or IV through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) using your work experience. You will start JRP after receiving your qualification.
- Skills Assessment: Submit your certificate and evidence to TRA for a positive skills assessment.
- Visa Application: Once you receive positive skills assessment for Cook/Chef, you can apply for skilled migration visas such as the Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent), Subclass 190 (State Nominated), Subclass 491 (Regional Work Visa), and 482 (Employee Sponsored Visa).
- Permanent Residency: 189 & 190 provide you PR straightaway, while 491 & 489 provide you allows you to live and work in Australia while providing the opportunity to apply for PR after meeting certain criteria.
RPL is faster and more affordable than completing a full-time cookery course, especially for those already working in kitchens.
